At the helm of Keneni Stars Academy is founder and director, Dr. Joash Bii, PhD - a visionary educator, accomplished scholar, and passionate advocate for quality education in rural Kenya. Born and raised in Bomet County, he experienced firsthand the challenges of accessing quality education in his community. His personal journey was marked by determination, resilience, and an unshakable belief in the transformative power of education. These experiences shaped his character and planted a seed that would later grow into a deep desire to give back to the community.
Dr. Bii pursued higher education in Computer Science, earning a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a Master of Science in Software Engineering, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science from the prestigious Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), where he completed his doctorate in 2023. Beyond his studies, Dr. Bii is a respected academic with different publications in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). He has served as a lecturer at various universities, where he has mentored and inspired hundreds of students pursuing careers in education and technology.
Dr. Bii's journey is a powerful testament to the ripple effect of investing in education. Supported in his own studies by partners who believed in his potential, including Lift the Lid, Inc. that came alongside him in 2010, he went on to earn his PhD and, true to that vision, chose to give back to his community. In 2017, he founded Keneni Stars Academy, creating a school that would provide quality, affordable education to children who might otherwise have no opportunity to learn. Today, Keneni Stars Academy stands as proof that when you invest in education, the impact extends far beyond one person, it transforms families, strengthens communities, and builds a legacy of hope.
Keneni Stars Academy is more than just a school. It is a place where the whole child is nurtured: mind, heart, and spirit. Under his leadership, the school has grown from 74 learners in 2019 to close to 300 learners today, with plans to accommodate upto 450 learners through 9th grade. He works tirelessly to create a joyful, loving environment where children feel safe, valued, and empowered to learn. His passion for holistic education rooted in Christian values, academic excellence, and practical life skills continues to inspire the learners, staff, and the entire community.
